The feather is perhaps the primary symbol of the Native Americans. All of them would agree that it represents a medium of communication with the supernatural world and with the spirit of the bird itself. An eagle feather is symbolic of Spirit. Because the eagle flies the highest of all birds he is the closest to Great Spirit. The Hawk is a messenger, bringing news to the individual. Each bird has a special esoteric meaning and gift to give to the People. All Nations have feathers for all occasions such as success in hunting, protection of homes, curing the sick, love songs, and for social dancing. To be given a blessed feather from a Native American is the highest honor one can receive. We are attracted to feathers because we sense a feeling of freedom, one that tells us our spirit naturally soars when it is not encumbered by the body.
