The feather fan is usually made from the full wing or tail of a particular bird, such as the turkey, eagle, hawk, owl, heron, & even the tiny hummingbird. Full fans are very special and are used in ceremony for healing & blessing. The Native American Church uses fans in their prayer meetings and social dancers have fans for powwows. The little hummingbird maybe small, but its feathers are considered to be very powerful doctoring tools in the hands of a medicine person. The feathers hold the spiritual gifts of the birds and thus pass that energy on in ceremony.
